The second-generation chipsets have made significant advancements, but a smaller, more efficient chip, should result in a more significant improvement in both performance and battery life.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 Max, which has a 12-core CPU and 38-core GPU, 64 GB of unified memory, and a 2-terabyte SSD is the setup I’m testing. You must pay a staggering $4,299 (£4,549) for this, and you can still spend more money to increase it to 96 GB of unified memory and a 4- or 8-TB SSD. Wild. Even when fully equipped, it still falls short of the finest laptop processors and graphics cards in terms of raw performance. But in practical tasks—and, I must stress, even on battery—it comes close to and occasionally beats the competition.
Few computers I’ve examined in the past have produced an audible “wow” as regularly as the MacBook Pro. It consumes less power than competitors, resulting in improved battery life overall—from productivity to demanding creative workloads—as well as significantly less noise and heat. The M2 Max variant came in at closer to 12 hours than the claimed 15 hours of wireless web browsing by Apple. But more importantly, it easily outperforms competitors who normally hit a maximum of two hours by an hour or two. When it’s time to recharge, the 140-watt MagSafe charger can restore you to full power in less than 90 minutes.
In the face of enormous productivity workloads, the M2 Max chuckles. It’s a tab collector’s fantasy. However, this chip is really not intended for that. To test our review process, I sought the assistance of seasoned editor and WIRED creative development manager Anna O’Donohue. In Adobe Premiere Pro, we combined 4K video with image files, 3D effects, and other elements. The M2 Max responded quickly. Anna observed the seamless playback; she had anticipated having to reduce the video’s quality to prevent stutters. We also had a quick export time left over.
Although it may have more power than the majority of video artists even require, this chipset is designed to handle rigorous, graphically demanding production work. For intermediate picture or video editors, as well as for anyone who doesn’t need a lot of graphical power, I’d suggest that the M2 Pro is a superior option (like for music production).
A Mac and gaming? It was a pipe dream, a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, for many years. But now that it’s available, having it with the other performance features of this laptop seems like Apple celebrating a win. Given Mac’s mediocre gaming performance throughout the years, you can achieve about 70 frames per second in Shadow of the Tomb Raider when playing on Ultra settings in Quad HD. With the same Ultra settings, reduce the resolution to 1080 pixels to fully benefit from the 120-Hz screen refresh rate. As long as the selection of supported games expands, creators who enjoy dabbling in their spare time will find gaming on Macs to be a pleasant perk.
The addition of an HDMI 2.1 port, Wi-Fi 6E capability (useful only if you have a Wi-Fi 6E router), Bluetooth 5.3, and MagSafe cables that match the Space Gray or Silver options are all excellent enhancements in addition to the new CPUs. Who doesn’t enjoy a little color coordination? The best features of its predecessor are still present, including a nice selection of ports, an upgraded 1080p webcam, great speakers, a fantastic keyboard, and a spacious and responsive trackpad.
This machine still only has Touch ID built into the keyboard as a means of Face ID unlocking. The only other thing I don’t like about the MacBook is how sharp the edges feel, but I quickly got used to that.
It is not necessary for you to update right away if you currently own an M1 Pro or M1 Max MacBook Pro. Using an ancient Mac with Intel processors? This transformation will be quite significant. If your existing device is still functioning perfectly, it would be worthwhile to hold off until the M3 Pro and M3 Max are built on the 3-nanometer process in 2024 for an even bigger improvement in power and battery life.
Unsure which MacBook Pro to purchase? It depends on how much battery life and top-notch performance are important to you. Consider pairing the M2 Pro with the 16-inch MacBook Pro for power users who desire a larger screen and more battery life. To make sure your backpack will fit, you might want to measure its size.
The M2 Pro should have more than adequate speed for creator-centric workloads like intermediate film editing and will provide longer battery life on both the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro.
